FMCSA & NHTSA Release Truck Accident Death Statistics

The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) have released truck and large bus fatality statistics for 2014. Each edition of Large Truck and Bus Crash Facts contains descriptive statistics about property-damage-only, injury, and fatal accidents involving large buses and trucks.

The 2014 FMCSA & NHTSA FARS Report reveals that fatal truck accidents have increased since 2010:

• 2010: 3,957 fatalities
• 2011: 4,043 fatalities
• 2012: 4,208 fatalities
• 2013: 4,278 fatalities
• 2014: 4,161 fatalities

For the purposes of the study, a large truck is defined as a truck with a gross vehicle weight rating greater than 10,000 pounds. A bus is defined as any motor vehicle designed to transport nine or more passengers, including the driver.

The information in this report was compiled by the Analysis Division of the FMCSA. The major sources for the data include the Fatality Analysis Reporting System (FARS), the General Estimates System (GES), and the Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) Crash File. The study also relied on highway statistics providing data on crash causation and fault. The report is divided into four chapters: crashes, vehicles in crashes, people in crashes, and drivers in crashes.
